The W*rk Lab is a seven month workshop supporting the development of three new musicals by women, transgender, and gender non-conforming composers, lyricists, and book writers. Through a highly individualized approach and intentional community-building, the W*rk Lab aims to provide resources and visibility for the next generation of underrepresented musical theatre creators, and position them for future success.
The W*rk Lab was built to uphold all four of our guiding pillars:
Access: Empowering career and financial planning through goal-setting workshops and use of our various opportunity databases.
Visibility: Monthly community discussions to exchange ideas, share work, challenge biases, and build a more inclusive musical theater canon.
Advocacy: Connecting artists with theaters and leaders that are actively pursuing new works programs.
Production: Providing a culminating workshop and closed reading for each project, as well as a final marketing packet for the future of each new musical.
*The culminating workshop will be either virtual or in-person, depending on the state of COVID-19. The producing team is planning accordingly for both possible options.*

How will the lab participants meet?
We will conduct the first 5 months of the lab virtually using Zoom and Facetime. Whether the workshops take place in NYC or virtually will be dependent on COVID-19 guidelines in April, 2021.
What is the time commitment?
The Lab will meet once a week for about an hour as a group. We will be available 24/7 for you and your project as needs arise.
Do I count as an "emerging" artist?
Probably! If you have specific concerns, please reach out to our Artistic Director, Justine Goggin at , Subject line: "Lab Eligibility".
Can I apply as a writing team?
Absolutely! Grants are awarded by project. No matter the size of the team, the prize and project budget will remain the same.
Our team includes a cis man. Are we still eligible for the Lab?
The W*rk Lab experience is specifically designed for teams comprised solely of women and TGNC artists. However, many of our other programs and resources will be open and available to teams that include cis men. These include, but are not limited to, our growing resource databases and small project-based grants coming in 2021.
